DUTIES OF THE RETIRED TEACHER
The mentoring program is designed to give assistance to an Ohio Student Education Association member majoring in education with intentions of becoming a teacher.
The stages of their preparatory teaching will vary. The retired teacher (mentor) must assess the mentees' needs as of the moment.
The mentor is one who:
  1. communicates with the student via e-mail
  2. is a good listener
  3. understands the student must have a feeling of "ownership" to the ideas being pursued
  4. projects a feeling of genuine interest in their personal and professional advancement
  5. attempt to develop the students' awareness of the many requirements (i.e., classroom management, parent conferences, extracurricular activities) other than subject matter areas regularly confronting a teacher, and
  6. continue to enhance the students' eagerness to TEACH.
Mentoring must be viewed as a partnership. Each party must feel free to contribute to the discussion. The partnership must be a relationship of equal sharing. A healthy relationship can develop not only into a successful sharing, but also a great friendship.
