The mentoring program is designed to give assistance to an Ohio Student Education Association member majoring in education with intentions of becoming a teacher.
The stages of their preparatory teaching will vary. The retired teacher (mentor) must assess the mentees' needs as of the moment.
The mentor is one who:
- communicates with the student via e-mail
- is a good listener
- understands the student must have a feeling of "ownership" to the ideas being pursued
- projects a feeling of genuine interest in their personal and professional advancement
- attempt to develop the students' awareness of the many requirements (i.e., classroom management, parent conferences, extracurricular activities) other than subject matter areas regularly confronting a teacher, and
- continue to enhance the students' eagerness to TEACH.

Mentoring must be viewed as a partnership. Each party must feel free to contribute to the discussion. The partnership must be a relationship of equal sharing. A healthy relationship can develop not only into a successful sharing, but also a great friendship.
